The Brief

How do you stop a big, white modern extension from feeling too clinical? You trade perfection for character. The challenge was to integrate a pristine new kitchen into a home full of history, ensuring the two felt connected rather than colliding.

The Architectural Balance

Instead of plastering over the past, we framed it. That incredible exposed sandstone wall became the anchor for the whole design. We placed the 1500mm Lacanche range centrally against it, allowing the crisp, painted joinery to contrast with the rough, historic stone. It instantly warms up the room and stops the space from feeling too “new.”

The Finished Kitchen

This project proves that sleek, modern design can live happily inside an old stone house. It’s open-plan, but it still feels intimate.

FAQs For This Kitchen Project

How does the kitchen design bridge the gap between the older house and the modern extension?

The design creates a sense of continuity between the two spaces. We used crisp All White, hand-painted cabinetry to reflect the clean lines of the modern architecture, while anchoring the kitchen with a traditional Lacanche range, and classic Armac Martin Belgrave hardware in polished chrome. This combination ensures the space feels contemporary enough for the new glass-filled extension, while remaining deeply rooted in the timeless quality of the original home.

The sandstone wall provides a rugged, organic texture that contrasts beautifully with the refined finish of the white cabinetry. By keeping the furniture palette neutral, the natural stone becomes the room’s primary artwork. It adds a sense of permanence and warmth, grounding the light filled extension and connecting the interior to the landscape outside.

For a high-performance Lacanche range, you need extraction that is powerful yet visually discreet. The bespoke Westin canopy is built directly into the architectural fabric of the room, providing industrial-grade ventilation without the clutter of a bulky hood. It maintains the kitchen’s sleek silhouette while ensuring the open-plan space remains clear of cooking aromas.

On a white canvas, the hardware becomes the ‘jewellery’ of the kitchen. We selected Armac Belgrave hardware for its ergonomic weight and classic detailing. The polished chrome finish provides a sophisticated touch of warmth against the cool white doors, drawing the eye to the precision of the joinery and adding a layer of tactile luxury to the space.

Rather than integrating the cooling appliances behind cabinetry, we wanted to showcase the stainless steel element of the Miele MasterCool fridge, freezer and wine store. These are bold, and balance perfectly with the metallic tones of the Armac Belgrave hardware and the Lacanche range. By celebrating the architectural quality of the appliances rather than hiding them, we’ve maintained a clean, minimalist aesthetic that reflects the high-calibre engineering and design standards of the modern extension.
